This paper elaborates the historical evolution and change of Kunming ancient city, whose name was changed from Zhuanghong ancient city before Qin Dynasty, Guchang city in Han and Jin Dynasties, Kunchuan city in Sui and Tang Dynasties, Tuodong city in Nanzhao, Shanchan city in Dali, Yachi city in Yan Dynasty to Kunming ancient city in Ming and Qing dynasties. It makes a deepgoing study on the cultural characteristics of Kunming ancient city and cultural connotation of the word "Kungming". At the same time, it also discusses the rich inner secret of the multinationality cultures, such the culture of ancient Yunan, Xicuan Culture, Nanzhao-Dali Culture etc.
